France capped a 2-0 victory over Uruguay thanks to a goalkeeping error after Lloris had kept the French in the game with a magnificent save in the first half. Mbappe could only head over the bar after finding himself unchallenged in the 15th minute, but in the 40th minute of the match, a free-kick by Griezmann was delivered into the box for Raphael Varane to send past Muslera with a glancing header. Four minutes later, Uruguay were almost level, but Lloris dived brilliantly to his right to keep out a header from Caceres. In the 61st minute, Muslera fumbled an innocuous shot from Anton Griezmann over the line and into the net giving France an unsurmountable two-goal lead and a place in the semi finals.

Belgium knock Brazil out

Belgium 2 Brazil 1 (Kazan)

Favourites Brazil are out of the World Cup after losing 2-1 to Belgium. In the 8th minute a corner was headed on by Miranda to Thiago Silva who could only push it onto the post from close range, but 5 minutes later, a Belgian corner-kick was flicked off the head of Kompany and in off a Brazilian for the opener. Lukaku's powerful run from inside his own half in the 31st minute, resulted in Belgium's 2nd goal when he passed the ball to Kevin de Bruyne who arrowed it into the bottom corner from just outside the area. In the 36th minute, a free header from Jesus went wide of the post and a minute later Courtois dived to his left to punch away a shot from Coutinho, while in the 41st minute, Alisson palmed a de Bruyne free-kick over the bar. In the 76th minute, Coutinho lifted the ball into the box between 2 Belgians for Renato Augusto to head past Courtois into the bottom corner moments after coming onto the pitch and give Brazil a life line, but Courtois proved to be too big an obstacle for Brazil to beat again and in stoppage time when he got his long arm across to push Neymar's shot out of the top corner their elimination was confirmed.
