Mbappe double kills off Argentina

France 4 Argentina 3 (Kazan)
Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France came from behind to knock Argentina out of the World Cup in a spectacular match in Kazan. Mbappe ran 70 yards before being pulled down in the box in the 11th minute and Antoine Griezmann, who had struck the top of the crossbar 2 minutes earlier, converted the spot-kick with a shot down the centre of the goal. Angel di Maria levelled the score with a splendid shot from 30 yards out in the 41st minute and 3 minutes into the second-half Messi turned around in the box and took a shot that was decisively deflected past Lloris by Gabriel Mercado to give Argentina the lead. France were on level terms in the 56th minute when Benjamin Pavard smacked the ball into the far corner with an unstoppable volley from outside the area and 6 minutes later Mbappe collected the ball in the box, made space and knocked the it past Armani to put France back into the lead. In the 68th minute, Giroud knocked the ball on to Mbappe in the box and the teenager tucked it in to give France a two-goal cushion. Argentina pulled a goal back in stoppage time when Messi floated the ball into the box and Aguero headed past Lloris to give the South Americans hope, but it was too late and France advance to the next round.

Cavani sends Portugal packing

Uruguay 2 Portugal 1 (Sochi)

European champions Portugal are out of the World Cup after losing 2-1 to Uruguay with Edinson Cavani scoring both goals for the South Americans before limping off. In the 7th minute, Suarez whipped the ball into the box and Cavani bravely flung himself to thump it in with his face. Patricio dived to his left to keep out a free-kick from Suarez in the 22nd minute, but in the 55th minute a short corner was delivered into the box and headed past Muslera by the unmarked Pepe to give Portugal parity. In the 62nd minute, Cavani received the ball on the edge of the area and curled it first-time into the far corner beyond the diving Patricio. In the 70th minute, Muslera dropped a cross but Bernado Silva couldn't find the target and Portugal bow out of the competition.
