The Netherlands came from behind to beat Mexico with 2 very late goals in the searing heat of Fortaleza. The first half was dictated by the heat, but 3 minutes after the break Giovani dos Santos chested the ball into his stride and whacked it into the corner of the net from 25 yards out. Ochoa made a point blank save from de Vrij in the 57th minute, diverting his effort onto the post and blocked an angled shot from Robben who had skipped into the box in the 74th minute, but he was finally beaten in the 88th minute when a corner was headed back by Huntelaar into the path of Wesley Sneijder who smashed in a bullet. With extra time looming, Robben went down in the box and Klaas Jan Huntelaar sent Ochoa the wrong way from the spot with an accurate shot into the bottom left corner.

Greece took 10-man Costa Rica to penalties and lost. Costa Rica scored in the 52nd minute when the ball was laid on to Bryan Ruiz who spun it low into the corner of the net from just outside the box, but in the 66th minute Duarte was dismissed for a second yellow, and as the Costa Ricans began to tire Greece pushed forward and in stoppage time Gekas turned in the box and struck a low shot that Navas could only parry into the path of Sokratis Papastathopoulos who hit the ball into the ground and over the keeper to give the Greeks a 30 minute lifeline which they wouldn't have needed had Navas not tipped Mitroglou's header acrobatically over the bar with the clock ticking away in stoppage time. With no goals in extra time and after successful penalties from Borges, Mitroglou, Ruiz, Christodoulopoulos, Gonzalez, Holebas and Campbell, Costa Rican keeper Navas made a splendid save from Gekas leaving Umana to dispatch his penalty high into the corner of the net and take Costa Rica through.
