Germany head to semi

Germany 1 France 0 (Rio de Janeiro)

A 1-0 victory over France gave Germany a place in the semi-finals. The only goal of the match came in the 12th minute when a free kick from the left was crossed into the box for Mats Hummels to side-head in off the bar. In the 34th minute Neuer parried Valbuena's angled volley, but Benzema's close-range follow up was foiled by Hummels. In the second half as the French half-heartedly pushed forward, the Germans threatened on the break and in the 82nd minute Özil got into the box and pulled the ball back to Schürrle via a Müller air shot, but his effort was blocked by the legs of Lloris. Deep into stoppage time Benzema forced his way into the box after a quick one-two, but his angled shot was swatted away together with any hope France may have had of rescuing the game.

Brazil end Colombian run

Brazil 2 Colombia 1 (Fortaleza)

Hosts Brazil moved on to the semi-final stage with a 2-1 win over Colombia, but will be without star player Neymar who was carried off injured and captain Thiago Silva who will be suspended after picking up another booking. It was Silva who opened the scoring when he turned the ball in at the far post from a corner kick after only 7 minutes. The early goal was the difference between the 2 teams until the 69th minute when David Luis unleashed a superb free kick from 35 yards to double Brazil's lead, but in the 78th minute Cesar brought Bacca down in the box and was sent the wrong way by James Rodriguez who bowed out of the competition with 6 goals to his name.
