Brazil pip Chile at the post

Brazil 1 Chile 1(Belo Horizonte) Brazil win on penalties

An exciting Chilean side took hosts Brazil to a penalty shootout but came up short. Brazil scored off the knee of David Luis when a corner was headed on to him in the 18th minute, but Chile levelled the score in the 32nd minute when Vargas stole the ball from a Brazilian throw-in and passed it to Alexis Sanchez who rolled it into the far corner. Bravo turned away a dipping shot from Alves in the 42nd minute and in the 55th minute Hulk had the ball in the back of the net but was adjudged to have used his upper arm to control it. In the 64th minute, after some quick passes from Chile, Cesar got down brilliantly to make a vital reflex save from Aranguiz and in the last minute of extra time Pinilla smashed the bar from the 18-yard line almost putting the hosts out of the competition. In the penalty shootout David Luis sent the keeper the wrong way and Cesar saved from Pinilla, Willian rolled his shot wide and Cesar guessed right to save from Sanchez, Bravo couldn't keep Marcelo's shot out and Aranguiz slammed the ball into the top corner, Bravo saved with his knees from Hulk while Diaz levelled the proceedings with a shot down the middle. Uruguay bite the dust

Colombia 2 Uruguay 0 (Rio de Janeiro)

James Rodriguez hit a double to send a toothless Uruguay home. Rodriguez chested the ball with his back to goal and volleyed magnificently in off the bar from outside the box in the 28th minute and in the 50th minute, after some excellent teamwork, Cuadrado headed a cross back for Rodriguez to knock in from 6 yards. Ospina made saves from distant shots, but Uruguay never looked like scoring 2 goals and fizzled out of the World Cup at the venue of their 1950 triumph.
