Argentina through at the death

Argentina 0 Switzerland 0 (Sao Paulo)
1-0 after extra time

Switzerland came close to taking Argentina to a penalty shootout, but fell at the last hurdle. Drmic was clear on goal for Switzerland in the 39th minute but failed to lob the keeper and in the 62nd minute Benadlio tipped Higuain's header over the bar. The Swiss keeper got down well to keep out a shot from Messi in the 78th minute and in the 18th minute of extra time he dived to palm away a shot from di Maria, but with 2 minutes left, Messi began a run and passed the ball to di Maria who swiped home into the far corner. Switzerland almost forced penalties in stoppage time when Dzemaili's header came of the base of the post and out off his knee.

Belgium knock out stubborn Americans

Belgium 0 USA 0 (Salvador) 2-1 after extra time

Tim Howard made a record number of saves to take Belgium to extra time. The Belgians showed intent from the start when Origi got into the box after less than a minute but saw his effort blocked by the leg of Howard. The American custodian dealt with everything that was thrown at him until 3 minutes into extra time when substitute Lukaku ran into the box from the right and his ball fell to Kevin de Bruyne who turned past his marker and fired in fro the edge of the 6-yard box. Just before the break de Bruyne laid the ball on to Lukaku in the box who dispatched it into the net, but 2 minutes after the changeover Bradley floated the ball into the box over the head of Julian Green who toe-poked his volley past Courtois to give America hope. The Americans came close with 6 minutes remaining when a cleverly-taken free kick reached Dempsey but Courtois foiled his effort to make sure of a Belgian quarter-final place against Argentina.
