Suarez sinks South Korea

Uruguay 2 South Korea 1 (Port Elizabeth)
Uruguay became the first team to reach the quarter-finals thanks to 2 goals from Luis Suarez against South Korea in the pouring Port Elizabeth rain. Park Chu Young hit the upright from a free-kick in the 5th minute, but 3 minutes later Forlan whipped the ball into the box which the Korean keeper failed to deal with and Suarez popped up to knock the ball in. Uruguay had a penalty claim for hand-ball turned down a minute before the break, but South Korea played better in the second half and after Park Chu Young had volleyed over from inside the box in the 51st minute, Korea got back in the game when a 68th minute free-kick crossed into the box was headed onto the head of Lee Chung Yong who levelled the score with the keeper off his line, and 2 minutes later the Korean scorer got into the box but shot at the keeper. Suarez had his angled shot parried away by Jung Sung Ryong for a corner in the 72nd minute and 2 minutes later missed an unmarked header from 8 yards, but with 10 minutes to go curled the ball delightfully in off the far post for the winner. Lee Dong Gook had a golden opportunity 3 minutes from time when he was through on goal but scuffed his shot and the keeper managed to keep the ball out ensuring the match was settled in ordinary time.

Black Stars shine for Africa

Ghana 2 USA 1 extra- time (Rustenburg)

Ghana continued to carry the hopes of Africa as they defeated the USA in extra time to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Kevin-Prince Boateng ran from the halfway line and fired past Howard to give the Black Stars a 5th minute lead, and in the 18th minute Howard punched away a swerving free-kick from Gyan. Findley was through on goal in the 35th minute but his shot was blocked by the foot of the Ghanaian keeper, and 2 minutes later Asamoah had a similar chance at the other end with the American custodian saving his powerful shot. The Americans began the second half with more determination and within 2 minutes created danger in the box which ended with Kingson saving from Feilhaber. In the 61st minute the USA were awarded a penalty for a foul and Donovan knocked the ball in off the post having sent Kingson the wrong way. Altidore got through in the 67th minute but was tackled by the onrushing Kingson who got down well 9 minutes later to save Bradley's shot from inside the box. With 10 minutes left Altidore ran into the box whilst being challenged by Mensah and did well to get a shot in but was just off target and the match went into extra time. Three minutes into extra time Gyan showed strength and balance to beat off his marker and slam the ball past Howard for the winner that sets up a meeting between Ghana and Uruguay.
