Paraguay in penalty paradise

Paraguay 0 Japan 0 - Paraguay win on penalties (Pretoria)
Japan and Paraguay failed to produce any goals in 120 minutes of football and needed a penalty shoot-out to decide the match. In the 20th minute Barrios turned well in the box but his weak effort was denied by the legs of Kawashima in the Japan goal and 2 minutes later at the other end Matsui's swerving shot came off the bar. In the 59th minute Riveros ran onto a cross but his header was too close to the keeper and a similar outcome from a Barrios header 5 minutes into extra time meant that with Kawashima heroically saving from Valdez after he had turned in the box the 2 teams had to go through a penalty shootout. Barreto, Endo, Barrios, Hasebe and Riveros all scored well-taken penalties but Komano hit the crossbar and with Valdez and Honda also scoring, Cardozo stepped up to send Kawashima the wrong way and Japan out of the World Cup.

Spain send neighbours home

Spain1 Portugal 0 (Cape Town)

David Villa scored as Spain moved into the quarter finals with a win against Portugal. Torres fired a shot from the left edge of the area in the 1st minute but the diving Eduardo palmed the ball away and 2 minutes later the keeper got down to push away a shot from Villa whose low shot he blocked at the near post in the 7th minute. Casillas was tested in the 20th minute with a shot from Tiago which he could only push up into the air but managed to punch the ball away from the head of Almeida and 8 minutes later the Spanish keeper was troubled from a swerving free-kick from Ronaldo but knocked the ball away. Almeida should have done better with a header in the 39th minute and 3 minutes later Casillas had to rush out of his area to get to the ball before Simao. An interception from Puyol almost turned into an own-goal in the 52nd minute and at the other end a diving header from Llorente on the hour was saved by Eduardo who saw a curling shot from Villa fly wide of the post a minute later, but in the 63rd minute when Eduardo blocked Villa's effort, the Spaniard lifted the rebound into the roof of the net to give the European champions the lead. With 20 minutes left Ramos got into the box from the right and fired a low shot across goal bringing a good save out of Eduardo whose palms were stung by Llorente in the 77th minute. Llorente headed the ball past the post in the 87th minute and a minute later Capdevila flung himself to block a volley from Danny. Portugal ended the match with 10 men after Costa was shown a red card for using his elbow. Spain go on to meet Paraguay in the next round.
