World Cup 2010
South Africa

Sunday June 27th

Round of 16

Don't mention the four

Germany 4 England 1 (Bloemfontein)
England crash out of the World Cup after a humiliating 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Germany. Özil got into the England box as early as the 5th minute but his shot from a tight angle was diverted over the bar by the legs of James and 15 minutes later Klose got behind the England defence from a goal-kick to slide the ball past James into the back of the net. Some good football by Germany after half an hour let Klose in but once again David James came to the rescue, but 2 minutes later a swift German attack caught England out with Klose releasing Müller who found Podolski in space to fire the ball in under James from an acute angle. Lampard got a foot to a Milner cross in the 35th minute but the German keeper got in the way and the ball was cleared, but 2 minutes later Gerrard delivered and Upson headed the ball in to reduce the deficit. Within a minute Lampard smashed the ball in off the underside of the bar but the referee waved play-on as it bounced out. Lampard's free-kick in the 52nd minute hit the German bar, and while England were looking for an equaliser, Germany counter-attacked in the 67th minute with Schweinsteiger finding Müller who beat James at his near post. Germany wrapped the match up 4 minutes later when Özil beat Barry for pace down the left flank and played the ball across goal for Müller to end any hopes of recovery England may have had.

Gifted Argentina go through

Argentina 3 Mexico 1 (Johannesburg)

Carlos Tevez struck twice against Mexico to take Argentina into the quarter-finals. Mexico started well with Salcido unleashing a vicious strike against the bar from 35 yards in the 8th minute and Guardado screwing the ball whiskers away from the post a minute later, but in the 25th minute Messi and Tevez burst into the box, and when the Mexican keeper blocked Tevez, the follow-up was returned to Tevez to head in from an offside position which was not spotted by the officials and gave Argentina the lead. The nature of the goal unsettled Mexico and 8 minutes later Osorio gifted the ball to Higuain who dribbled past Perez in the Mexico goal to make it 2 for Argentina. Mexico responded with a Salcido shot from distance a minute later which Romero pushed away. Di Maria ran into the box from the left in the 37th minute but Perez got down with a strong left hand to punch his shot away. Tevez made it 3 with a bullet into the top corner in the 52nd minute while at the other end Hernandez saw his powerful header fly over the bar in the 63rd minute and a downward volley from Barrera bounced up and was cleared off the line in the 69th minute 2 minutes before Mexico pulled a goal back through Hernandez who turned into the box and smashed the ball into the roof of the net. Messi almost added his name to the score-sheet when he dribbled his way along the 18-yard line in stoppage time before unleashing his shot which was pushed away by the keeper.
