Job half done

England 4 Montenegro 1 - World Cup qualifier Wembley 11 October 2013

England are a win away from qualification after breaking down Montenegrin resistance with 4 goals in the second half. The hosts who had left their fans fearing the worst with a blunt performance in the first 45 minutes returned after the break with a sharper edge and broke the deadlock within 3 minutes when Welbeck's shot was saved by Poleksic only for Rooney to knock in the rebound. In the 62nd minute Montenegro stabbed themselves in the foot when Boskovic screwed a Sturridge cross past his own keeper, but a minute later Jovetic rattled the England crossbar with a shot from range and in the 71st minute Damjanovic poked Beciraj's shot past Hart. Andros Townsend settled England's nerves when he fired in off the post from outside the area in the 78th minute and when Sturridge was brought down in stoppage time, he picked himself up to send the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game.

England double secures World Cup place

England 2 Poland 0 - World Cup qualifier Wembley 15 October 2013

A goal at the end of each half against Poland at Wembley earned England qualification to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the 27th minute Townsend curled the ball onto the bar from 25 yards out and Szczesny blocked Sturridge's effort from the rebound, but with 4 minutes of the half remaining Rooney nodded England ahead from a Baines cross. Lewandowski was presented with a good opportunity in the first half but missed his target and was foiled by Hart in the second half, but it was Szczesny who was the busier of the 2 keepers, making several good saves to keep the England fans on the edge of their seats until the 88th minute when Stephen Gerrard got behind a defender, ran into the box and poked the ball past Szczesny to make certain of qualification.
