Long way to go

England 1 Republic of Ireland 1 friendly international Wembley 29 May 2013

England were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley just days before their prestigious match with Brazil in Rio. Shane Long rose above Johnson and Jagielka to head on a Coleman cross past the diving Hart in the 13th minute, but 10 minutes later the ball fell to Lampard who knocked it past Forde from 6 yards out. Captain Cole came close to scoring his first international goal for England but was beaten to Walcott's cross by Coleman just under the Irish bar 3 minutes into the second half. Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain also had chances but Forde stood his ground to condemn England to their 6th draw in a year under Roy Hodgson.

Brazil 2 England 2 friendly international Rio 2 June 2013

Brazil came from behind to deny England a win at the new Maracana. After a goalless first half in which Joe Hart was called into action several times between the England sticks, Brazil opened the scoring at the new Maracana when a looping long-range shot from Hernanes in the 57th minute rebounded off the bar for Fred to volley in. Ten minutes later Oxlade-Chamberlain - having only just come off the bench - whacked in a low shot from outside the box to put England on level terms and in the 79th minute Rooney curled the ball into the top corner with the aid of a slight deflection, but England's lead lasted only 3 minutes as Paulinho volleyed home the equaliser to share the honours.
