German jinx hits new Wembley
England 1 Germany 2 ( Wembley friendly )
England suffered another home defeat against their old rivals Germany. Lampard beat Jens Lehmann at the near post in the 9th minute after he was skilfully put through by Micah Richards, but when Robinson misjudged a Schneider cross in the 26th minute the ball fell to Kevin Kuranyi who accepted the gift and put Germany on equal terms with a tap-in against the run of play. Christian Pander scored a screamer in the 39th minute on his debut for Germany, and a minute later Lehmann made a good save from a Michael Owen header. Owen should have scored just before the break, but having got past Lehmann he lost his composure and found the angle too tight. Kieron Dyer connected with a low pass from Beckham in the 66th minute, but missed the target. John Terry saw his header cleared off the line in the 76th minute and 2 minutes later the lively Shaun Wright-Phillips tested Lehmann with a low shot. Kuranyi was the main threat on the counter-attack in the later stages, but the first-half goals were enough to give Germany the win at Wembley.
