England 1 Spain 0 (Wembley friendly 12 November 2011)
England defeated world champions Spain with a Frank Lampard goal early in the 2nd half. Neither side produced any meaningful chances in the first 45 minutes but 4 minutes after the break a Milner free-kick was headed onto the post by Bent for Lampard who was captaining England for the night to head over the line. In the 56th minute Villa picked up a through ball and got past Hart but hit the side netting and 10 minutes later a one-two between Wellbeck and Rodwell caused concern in the Spanish defence, but it was Villa who came closest in the 73rd minute when he took a defensive header on his chest and hit the post with a volley. Fabregas tested Hart with a quick turn and deflected shot in the 89th minute and less than a minute later side-footed the ball just past the England upright as the hosts hung on to claim a victory in front of a packed Wembley on Remembrance weekend.
