Rooney return hurts hosts

Wayne Rooney returned with a goal that sent England through and co hosts Ukraine out of the competition. Ukraine were the more ambitious side in the first half but the best chance fell to England with Rooney missing the target from a free header in the 28th minute. However, Gerrard's low cross came off the keeper and was headed over the line by Rooney 3 minutes into the 2nd half. Milevskiy headed over from 5 yards in the 61st minute and a minute later Devic had his effort half-blocked by Hart and Terry heroically cleared it off the line, though goal-line technology would have proven the validity of the goal. As Group winners England will face Italy in the next round.

Proud Swedes topple France

Sweden went out of the competition with a win that condemned France to 2nd place and a meeting with world champions Spain. Toivonen got past French keeper Lloris in the 10th minute to clip the outside of the bar from a tight angle, but Sweden took the lead from a spectacular Ibrahimovich volley in the 54th minute and made it 2 in stoppage time when Holmen's miscued volley came off the crossbar for Larsson to hammer high into the net.
