Quarter final Donetsk

Spain on course

A fearful French side offered little resistance against Spain who are now 2 wins away from winning their 3rd major tournament in a row. Jordi Alba swung the ball in from the byline for Xabi Alonso to head a downward header back across goal beyond Lloris in the 19th minute. With France creating very few chances and the superior Spaniards seeming content to sit on their lead, a 1-0 win for Spain was on the cards, but Spain were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute and Xabi Alonso stepped up to dispatch the ball away from the keeper and make it a double on his 100th appearance for Spain.

Quarter final Kiev

Tired England pay the penalty

Italy made it to the last four by defeating England on penalties. The Italians came close as early as the 3rd minute when de Rossi's spinning shot from 30 yards came off the post, but 2 minutes later Buffon stuck out an arm to deny Johnson's close range effort. Three minutes after the break, de Rossi missed a sitter and 4 minutes later his shot was parried by Hart who denied Balotelli with his legs before seeing Montolivo shoot over the bar. In the 11th minute of extra-time Diamanti's cross brush the post, but with England's goal living a charmed life and the referee failing to award England a penalty for shirt pulling, the match went to penalties. Balotelli stroked the first penalty home with confidence and Gerrard struck his low into the left corner, but Montoivo missed his shot and Rooney smashed in his spot kick to give England the lead. After Pirlo had scored with a cheeky chip, Ashley Young rattled the crossbar and with Nocerino sending Hart the wrong way and Ashley Cole having his shot saved by Buffon, Alessandro Diamanti stepped up to deceive Hart and send Italy through.
