Mandžukic earns Croatia draw

In a tightly-fought match Croatia scored in the 2nd half to share the spoils with Italy. The Italians took the lead in the 39th minute when Pirlo curled a dipping free kick from the left in between the keeper and the post, but in the 72nd minute Mario Mandžukic brought a cross down and smacked it in off the post for his 3rd goal of the tournament.

Irish outclassed and out of Europe

Fernando Torres scored twice as the Republic of Ireland became the first team to suffer elimination from the competition after their 4-0 trouncing by world champions Spain. Torres stole the ball just outside the area in the 4th minute, ran wide into the box and blasted it past Given into the roof of the net for the only goal of the half, despite Spanish dominance. Four minutes into the 2nd half Given punched away a shot from Torres only as far as Villa who steadied himself and picked the bottom left corner. In the 70th minute Torres ran into the box and slotted the ball past Given for the 3rd and with 8 minute left Fabregas picked up a short corner in the box and thumped it in off the far post to inflict Ireland's heaviest defeat under Trapattoni.
