Russia slip out on Greece

Greece caused a major upset by knocking Russia off the top of the table and out of Europe. The Russians, needing only a draw, fell behind on the stroke of half time when Karagounis was allowed to get on the end of a long throw-in, run into the box and drill the ball past the keeper. Despite Russia needing to score, it was Greece who came closest in the 2nd half when Tzavellas curled his free kick off the top of the Russian bar in the 70th minute, thought Dzagoev headed Arshavin's cross inches wide of the Greek goal with 7 minutes to go.

Poles Czeched out

Co hosts Poland were knocked out of Europe by their neighbours from the Czech Republic. Poland had the better of the early exchanges, but with news of a Greek goal filtering through at half time, the Czechs came out with more determination and scored the all important goal in the 72nd minute when they hit Poland on the break which resulted in Jiracek cutting between 2 defenders and passing the ball into the corner of the net. Petr Cech was beaten by Blaszczykowski in the last seconds of stoppage time but Kadlec cleared off the line to keep the Czechs in the tournament.
