England pass French test

Roy Hodgson's England began their competitive life with a 1-1 draw against France. England had a golden opportunity to score in the 15th minute when Milner rounded the French keeper but couldn't hit the target. In the 30th minute Gerrard delivered a free kick onto the head of Lescott who opened the scoring for England, but 9 minutes later Nasri swept the ball in from just outside the area to restore equality.

Sheva double sinks Sweden

Andriy Shevchenko scored twice in the space of 6 minutes as co hosts Ukraine came from behind to beat Sweden in Kiev. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose 39th minute header across goal skimmed the post, opened the scoring for Sweden in the 52nd minute when he tapped in Källström's pass from 6 yards out. Ukraine were behind for only 3 minutes when Shevchenko flung himself to beat Mellberg in the air and head in a Yarmolenko cross, and 6 minutes later the same player ghosted in to head in a corner-kick at the near post.
