Group C

Courageous Croatia cave in

A late goal from Jesus Navada sent Croatia home and Spain to the top of the group. Both keepers had to get down several times to smother long-distance shots in the first half with no real chances in the match until the 59th minute when a delicious cross from Modric found Rakitic whose free header was too close to Casillas, but 3 minutes from time Fabregas chipped the ball over the last line of defence to Iniesta who squared it to Navas to whack over the line and decide the outcome of the group.

Italy win and hope

In a tense night Italy defeated the Irish and got a helping hand from the Spanish. Cassano headed the ball over the line at the near post from a corner kick in the 35th minute despite Duff's attempt to make an off the line clearance. Buffon kept Italy in the tournament when he got down in the 79th minute to block a thunderous free-kick from Keith Andrews who was dismissed a minute from time for a second yellow card. Balotelli scored with an overhead-kick from a corner in the 90th minute and with a favourable result from Spain, Italy pregressed to the quarter-finals.
