Quarter final

Spain lay penalty ghost to rest

Spain beat Italy on penalties to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2008. A cagey first-half produced very little entertainment with Buffon getting down to stop a free-kick from Villa in the 25th minute and Silva seeing his 37th minute shot fly wide of the post. In the 2nd half a fierce free-kick from Senna in the 80th minute was fisted away by Buffon who 2 minutes later let a shot from the same player squirm under his body and almost over the line. Three minutes into extra-time Silva fired just wide of the post and 2 minutes later Casillas tipped over a header from di Natale. The last chance of the match fell to Spain in the 120th minute but Cazorla dragged the ball wide of the post. In the penalty shoot-out after Casillas had made 2 saves and Buffon only one, the final spot kick was taken by Fabregas who scored to send Italy home. Spain had previously lost on penalties in major competitions in 1986, 1996 and 2002 on this very day. (Spain 0 Italy 0, Spain win on penalties)
