Quarter final

Guus dumps Dutch

Dutchman Guus Hiddink masterminded a Russian victory to knock out the Netherlands. Russia started positively and forced van der Sar into action diving to his left to keep out a free-kick from Zhirkov in the 6th minute. Two minutes later the unmarked Pavluchenko headed over the bar. Edwin van der Sar was again at full stretch in the 31st minute getting his fingertips to a low curling shot from Arshavin and tipping over Kolodin's 35-yard shot from the resulting corner kick. Ruud vann Nistelrooy drilled in a low shot in the 37th minute which Akinfeev parried and Russia scrambled to safety. In the 56th minute Arshavin delivered a ball into the box which Pavluchenko side-footed on the volley into the Dutch net to give Hiddink's men the lead. Anyukov got into the box and fired a shot from a tight angle in the 70th minute but the Dutch keeper stuck out an arm and blocked his effort. Sneijder floated a free-kick into the box in the 86th minute which van Nistelrooy met with a diving header to rescue the Dutch and take the match to extra time. Pavluchenko rattled the bar with a shot from the edge of the box in the 97th minute as Russia continued to search for the winning goal. Finally Russia got their reward in the 112th minute when Arshavin got to the byline and crossed the ball over van der Sar for Torbinsky to knock in at the far post. Arshavin secured Russia's semi-final place when he received a quick throw-in and drilled the ball in - with a slight deflection - between the legs of van der Sar with only 4 minutes of the match remaining.
