Russia rush past tired Swedes

Needing only a draw Sweden failed to achieve their goal and were eliminated after losing to Russia. Arshavin's 21st minute goal-bound cross was tipped over the bar and the ensuing corner was volleyed inches wide by Zhirkov, but 3 minutes later Pavlyuchenko ended a series of passes by rolling the ball past Isaksson for the first Russian goal. Larsson's glancing header in the 27th minute came of the Russian bar and Pavlyuchenko struck the upright in the 36th minute with Isaksson clawing away Zyrianov's follow-up header from a sitting position. Five minutes into the 2nd half, after some swift passes Arshavin slid in to double the lead. Zyrianov ran towards the Swedish goal in the 80th minute but saw his deflected shot come of the post. Sweden showed no urgency and Russia had several chances in the last 10 minutes to extend their lead, with Arshavin coming closest when his effort was blocked by the legs of Isaksson. (Russia 2 Sweden 0)

Spain end Greek reign

The reigning champions Greece left the competition with no points after losing to Spain in the last day of group D. Xabi Alonso was in shooting mood, almost finding the target in the 23rd minute with an audacious shot from inside his own half, but it was Greece who took the lead with 3 minutes of the first half remaining when a free-kick was floated into the box where Charisteas sent a powerful downward header past Reina. Alonso's thumping shot came off the inside of the post in the 53rd minute, but in the 61st minute De La Red smashed the ball past Nikopolidis in off the bar from inside the area, and with only 2 minutes left Guiza scored the winner for Spain with a close-range header. (Spain 2 Greece 1)
