Portugal on track

Portugal all but guaranteed a place in the next round after beating the Czech Republic 3-1 in Geneva. Petr Cech was beaten in the 8th minute when his attempt to foil Ronaldo was picked up by Deco and converted into the empty net, but 9 minutes later Sionko met a corner-kick with a powerful header to level the score. Deco squared the ball on for Ronaldo to shoot home from the edge of the area in the 63rd minute and with the match into added-on time Ronaldo ran into space with only the keeper to beat and unselfishly presented Quaresma with a tap-in to secure the win. (Portugal 3 Czech Republic 1)

Swiss go out in the rain

Co-hosts Switzerland became the first team to be knocked out of the competition after losing to Turkey in torrential rain. A free-kick from Nihat in the 29th minute caused confusion in the rain as the ball is whipped into the goalmouth and pushed by Benaglio onto the head of Arda who sees his header strike to post, but at the other end Eren Derdiyok got the ball past the Turkish keeper and passed it through the puddles for Hakan Yakin to side-foot into an empty net in the 32nd minute. The same player was presented with a similar opportunity 2 minutes later, but failed to hit the target. As weather and ground conditions improved in the 2nd half, Turkey were able to concentrate on the game and found themselves on level terms in the 58th minute when Nihat crossed the ball for Semih to head past Benaglio who could only palm the ball into the net. The hosts pushed forward and could have taken the lead in the 84th minute but Volkan did well to get down and save a shot from Yakin and block the follow-up. Instead it was Turkey who won the game with a deflected shot from Arda in stoppage time, sending Switzerland out of the competition and Portugal through to the round. (Switzerland 1 Turkey 2)
