Sunday July 4th
Portugal's dream was shattered at the final hurdle by a well organized Greek side who had never previously scored a goal in a major tournament. The hosts were favorites to win and Greece had to defend well to keep them at bay. Nikopolidis turned a shot by Montero round for a corner in the 14th minute, and Maniche shot wide 10 minutes later. Charisteas headed home from a corner in the 57th minute to stun the expectant home crowd. Two minutes later Nikopolidis had to get down to punch away a strike from Ronaldo, and in the 64th minute he had to deal with an effort from Figo. Ronaldo had a golden opportunity to score in the 75th minute, but couldn't keep his shot down. Five minutes later his shot was deflected for a corner. Carvallo forced a save out of the Greek keeper in the 81st minute and Figo's last minute effort from inside the area went just wide.
The final whistle brought to an end a competition which was won by the second least fancied team.
