Peru brought down to earth
Saturday 30 June 2007 Venezuela
Venezuela 2-0 Peru
Hosts Venezuela recorded a historic win to book a place in the next round.
Peru were reduced to 10 men as early as the 14th minute when Garcia was shown a straight red for elbowing an opponent. Butron got down well to turn Maldonado's shot round the post in the 48th minute, but Cichero rose to head in the ensuing corner. A minute later Pizarro ran into the box but his shot clipped the outside of the post. Marino saw his shot fisted over the bar in the 59th minute and Peru were denied a penalty in the 62nd minute when Pizarro was challenged as he was about the pull the trigger in front of goal. Paez - who had already been booked - received his marching orders in the 77th minute when he ignored the referee's whistle and tucked the ball away, but 2 minutes later Arismendi went on a magnificent solo run and found the corner of the net to ensure victory for the host nation who had only won once before in the history of the tournament.
