Mexico foil Ecuador

Sunday 1 July 2007 Venezuela
Mexico 2-1 Ecuador

Mexico secured a place in the next round with a 2-1 victory over Ecuador.
Nery Castillo cashed-in on some indecisive defending and rolled the ball into the empty net in the 21st minute. Benitz hit the ball on the volley but narrowly missed the target in the 33rd minute and at the other side Arce had his shot blocked by the keeper and saw his follow-up effort cleared off the line. In the second half Sanchez made 2 magnificent saves to deny Benitez in the 61st and 76th minute, but it was Mexico who scored when Bravo got on the end of a sweet delivery from Blanco to head home in the 80th minute. Sanchez was finally beaten in the 84th minute when a long-range shot from Mendez took a deflection and nestled into the back of the net.
