Copa America 2007 (semi-final)

Argentina power through to final

Wednesday 11 July 2007 Venezuela
Argentina 3-0 Mexico

Argentina reached the Copa America final after a convincing 3-0 win against Mexico.
Guardado came close for Mexico in the 35th minute, but his side-footed effort went out off the frame of the woodwork. Sanchez stood his ground to deny Tevez in the 42nd minute, but a minute before half time Riquelme deceived the Mexicans with his free-kick that found Heinze who stuck the ball in to give Argentina a half-time lead. Ten minutes into the second half Castillo's shot across the face of goal scraped the crossbar, but 6 minutes later Messi brought the stadium to its feet when he beat the Mexican keeper with a delicate chip to double Argentina's lead. A controversial penalty in the 65th minute was converted by Riquelme with a cheeky finish that secured Argentina a place in the final against Brazil.
