Narrow win for dominant Spain
(Spain 2 Uruguay 1)
Uruguay were beaten narrowly by a sublime Spanish side in their opening match. Spain showed intent from the start as Fabrigas struck the inside of the post in the 10th minute before Pedro gave the world champions the lead when his volley from just outside the box took a decisive deflection off a defender in the 20th minute. In the 32nd minute Fabrigas slotted the ball to Soldado who lifted it past Muslera in the Uruguay goal. The South Americans who had been chasing shadows for most of the match reduced the deficit when Luis Suarez brilliantly bent in a free kick with 2 minute to go.

Wasteful Nigeria hit six
(Nigeria 6 Tahiti 1)
Nnamdi Oduamadi claimed a hat trick as Nigeria stumbled their way to a 6-1 win over minnows Tahiti. After only 5 minutes Echiejile's tame shot took a couple of deflections past the keeper into the back of the net and 5 minutes later Oduamadi got into the box and knocked the ball past Samin who dropped a low cross in the 26th minute for Oduamadi to claim his second of the match with a tap in. Tahiti celebrated a goal in the 54th minute when Jonathan Tehau rose to head a corner kick in at the far post, but in the 68th minute the same player turned a ball in the 6-yard box past his own keeper and in the 76th minute Ideye played the ball in to Oduamandi who side-footed it in for his hat trick. Echiejile wrapped things up in the 80th minute when the keeper failed to deal with a low cross, but the last cheer went to Jonathan Tehau who beat the outrushing Nigerian keeper with a header that sailed narrowly wide of the post 2 minutes from time.

Ten for Spain
(Spain 10 Tahiti 0)
Fernando Torres missed a penalty and scored 4 as Spain broke a Confederations Cup record with a 10-0 win over Tahiti. Torres ran into the box and beat the keeper after only 5 minutes but Spain failed to find the net again until the 31st minute when Villa played the ball into Silva who passed it into the back of the net and 2 minutes later Torres through on goal beat the keeper and rolled in the 3rd. Villa received the ball in the box and poked it passed Roche in the 39th minute and 5 minutes after the interval sidefooted a Monreal cross in for the 5th. In the 57th minute Villa ran into the box and pulled the ball back for Torres to complete his hat trick and in the 64th minute Roche let a long ball slip past him allowing Villa to roll it into the empty goal for his hat trick. Two minutes later Mata played a one two off a Tahitian defender and fired in the 8th and although Torres missed a penalty by skimming the crossbar in the 77th minute, he rounded the keeper a minute later to net his 4th of the match. With a minute to go Silva turned in the box and found the corner of the net to take the scoreline into double figures.

Uruguay win decider
(Uruguay 2 Nigeria 1)
Diego Forlan marked his 100th cap with the winning goal that leaves Nigeria needing a miracle to stay in the competition. In the 19th minute Forlan sent the ball from a returned corner kick into the 6-yard box where Lugano steered it in with a scuffed shot, but in the 37th minute John Obi Mikel got past Lugano in the box and picked the top left corner to level the score. Uruguay sail past Tahiti
(Uruguay 8 Haiti 0)
Abel Hernandez netted 4 goals as Uruguay put 8 past Tahiti to secure a semi final place against hosts Brazil. After only 2 minutes Scotti flicked on a header from a corner kick for Hernandez to head in at the far post and in the 24th minute Hernandez picked up a through ball, lifted it over a defender and beat the keeper for his second. Three minutes later Perez got behind the defensive line, headed the ball past the keeper and onto the post before tapping it in over the line. On the stroke of half time Hernandez received the ball on the edge of the area, ran into the box and knocked it past the keeper for his hat trick. Four minutes into the second half Uruguay were awarded a penalty but Meriel saved an accurate but weak shot from Scotti whose misery was completed 2 minutes later when he committed a second yellow card offence and became the first player in the tournament to sent off. Tahiti were also reduced to 10 men when Ludivion was shown a second yellow in the 59th minute and 2 minutes later Uruguay extended their lead when Gargano drilled the ball into the 6-yard area for Lodeiro to knock in and 5 minutes later Hernandez sent Meriel the wrong way from the spot to make it 4 for himself and 6 for Uruguay. Suarez came on and made a late impact when he turned a defender inside out before rolling the ball past the keeper in the 82nd minute and in the 90th minute he received the ball from Hernandez on the edge of the area and picked the bottom corner to make it eight.

Alba brace seals Nigerian fate
(Spain 3 Nigeria 0)
Spain ended Nigerian hopes of reaching the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over the African champions. Jordi Alba danced his way past several defenders in the box before slotting the ball past Enyeama in the 3rd minute. Enyeama had luck on his side in the 39th minute when he collected the ball off the post after being beaten by Fabrigas who had raced onto a low cross, but in the 62nd minute Torres scored with a diving header moments after coming on and Jordi Alba wrapped things up 2 minutes from time when David Villa sent him through on goal to round the keeper seal the win for Spain.
