United reign in Moscow

Manchester United 1 Chelsea 1 (6-5 on penalties) (Moscow 21 May 2008 )
Manchester United needed extra time and penalties to get the better of compatriots Chelsea and win the ultimate European club prize. Cristiano Ronaldo met Wes Brown's cross with a towering header to put United ahead in the 26th minute. van der sar made a point-blank save to claw away a header from his own defender Rio Ferdinand in the 34th minute and a minute later Petr Cech made a double save to deny a Tevez header and brilliantly keep out Michael Carrick's follow-up shot, but on the stroke of half time a shot from Essien was deflected into the path of Lampard who restored parity for Chelsea. The Londoners came close in the 2nd half with Drogba striking the post from outside the area, but extra time was needed, in which Lapmard stabbed the ball past van der Sar only to see it come off the underside of the bar, and Ryan Giggs had his goal-bound shot headed away by John Terry. As tension grew, minutes before the penalty shoot-out Drogba received his marching orders for a slap on Vidic. With Ronaldo being the only player to have his penalty saved, John Terry stepped up in the pelting rain to win the cup for Chelsea, but slipped and saw his shot hit the post, giving United a lifeline. van der Sar made the all important save from Anelka to hand Manchester United the European Cup 50 years on from the Munich air crash.

Portsmouth win FA Cup

Portsmouth 1 Cardiff 0 (Wembley 17 May 2008 )
A first-half goal from Kanu won the FA Cup for Portsmouth against Cardiff at Wembley giving Harry Redknapp his first major trophy in his 25 year managerial career. Kanu showed skill to get past a defender and the goalkeeper in the 22nd minute but with the goal at his mercy could only hit the outside of the post. However in the 37th minute when Cardiff keeper Peter Enckelman fumbled Utaka's low cross, the lanky Nigerian was quick to react and score what turned out to be the only goal of the match. Cardiff, who had a goal disallowed for hand-ball at the end of the first half, did not create enough chances to seriously threaten Portsmouth's lead.
