in Thailand

Thais tie with Iraq in the rain (Thailand 1 Iraq 1)
The tournament was only 6 minutes old when Sutee Suksomkit sent Noor Sabri the wrong way to put group hosts ahead from the penalty spot. Kosin made several saves in the Thai goal, until the 32nd minute when he was caught in no-man's land and saw Younis Mahmoud's header sail past him for the Iraqi equalizer. Thailand came close in the second half, but had to settle for a draw.

Cahill saves Australian blushes (Australia 1 Oman 1)
It took a last minute opportunist goal by Tim Cahill to cancel out Badar Mubarak's 32nd minute strike and give Australia a point against Oman. All 4 teams in group A are equal after their first matches.

Group B matches
in Vietnam

Party time for Vietnam (Vietnam 2 UAE 0)
Group B hosts enjoyed a 2 goal victory over the UAE with second-half goals from Huynh Quang Thanh in the 63rd minute and Le Cong Vinh who lobbed the keeper 10 minutes later.

Late strike upsets Japan (Japan 1 Qatar 1)
A free-kick by Sebastian Quintana 2 minutes from time earned Qatar a point against a Japanese team that had been leading through a confidently taken Takahara goal in the 61st minute. Qatar had Hussein Yasser sent off for a crunching tackle on Hashimoto in stoppage time. Coach Musovic was shown to the stands for his reactions to the dismissal.

Group C matches
in Malaysia

China too strong for Malaysia (Malaysia 1 China 5)
Group hosts Malaysia were silenced in the 15th minute when Han Peng headed the ball in at the far post. Shao Jiayi slid in to double China's lead in the 36th minute and China went further ahead when Wang Dong beat Azizon Kadir with a low shot in the 51st minute. Four minutes later Han Peng got on the end of a cross to make it 4 for China. Indra Putra Mahayuddin pulled a goal back for Malaysia with an accurate low shot from distance in the 72nd minute, but China had the last laugh when Wang Dong headed the ball over the keeper for his second of the night in the 90th minute.

Iran overcome early scare(Iran 2 Uzbekistan 1)
Uzbekistan were given a head start when Rahman Rezaei headed the ball past his advancing keeper Roudbarian in the 16th minute, but Seyed Jalal Hosseini levelled the score with a header in the 55th minute and Kazemian gave Iran all 3 points with a neat finish 12 minutes from time.

Group D matches
in Indonesia

Winning start for Indonesia (Indonesia 2 Bahrain 1)
Group D hosts Indonesia got off to a winning start with an exciting win over Bahrain. Budi Sudarsono got on the end of a through ball to cheast it past the keeper and roll in the opener in the 14th minute, but Bahrain were on level terms when Sayed Mahmood Jalal tucked in a loose ball in the 27th minute. Bambang Pamungkas smashed the ball in after the keeper had managed to push it onto the post from a Firman Utina shot in the 64th minute.

Top guns draw (South Korea 1 Saudi Arabia 1)
Yasser Al Qahtani scored from the penalty spot in the 77th minute to earn Saudi Arabia a point after Choi Sung Kuk had scored for South Korea with a deadly header 11 minutes earlier. Group hosts Indonesia top the group after the first matches.
