Mali break Gabon hearts

National hero Pierre Aubameyang had his spot-kick saved as Mali knocked co hosts Gabon out on penalties. Aubameyang got through on goal and lifted the ball past the keeper but off the base of the post in the 29th minute, but in the 54th minute he pulled the ball back from the by-line for Mouloungui to knock in. Four minutes later Cousin scuffed his volley inside the box and hit the post with the ball coming back into the arms of a relieved Diakite, and with 6 minutes to go, Maiga headed the ball to Diabate who turned and forced it in under Ovono in the Gabon goal to take the match to extra time in which Mali came closest to scoring when Keita slid in to scoop the ball over the bar from inside the 6 yard area with the last kick of the match before penalties. Soumaila Diakite got down to save from Aubameyang and with all other penalties successfully converted Gabon were out of the competition.

Tunisia drop out

A goalkeeping clanger in extra-time handed Ghana passage to the semi-finals. Asamoah dived at the near post to flick a corner-kick on for Mensah to head in after only 10 minutes, but 3 minutes before the interval Dhaouadi lifted the ball onto the head of Khelifa who levelled the score. In the 75th minute Gyan hit the ball on the run but Mathlouthi got down to make a brilliant save and keep Tunisia in the game, but in extra-time Mathlouthi became the villain as he dropped a high cross that was going wide at the far post, for Ayew to tap in Ghana's 101st minute winner. In an increasingly bad-tempered match Abdennour was sent off for a 108th minute elbow.
