Spot the difference

A spot kick at the end of the first half was the difference between Nigeria and Benin. Yakubu was through on goal in the 16th minute but rolled the ball wide of the Benin post. Sessegnon rattled the Nigeria bar with a thunderous shot in the 39th minute, but 2 minutes later Shittu's header from a free-kick was brilliantly knocked away by Chitou and when the ball was crossed back into the danger area a header resulted in Boco handling the ball which Yakubu coolly rolled home with Chitou going the wrong way. Benin had a good chance in the 55th minute with Kobena hitting the crossbar, but the Nigeria penalty in the first half was enough to decide the outcome of the match. (Nigeria 1 Benin 0)

Pharaohs safe

Egypt picked up another 3 points to secure their passage into the next round of the competition with a 2-0 win over Mozambique. The Mozambicans matched the African champions for most of the first half, but had to rely on their keeper to dive to his right and beat away a low shot from Motaeb in first-half stoppage time. Two minutes into the 2nd half Mozambique fell behind when a low cross from Ahmed Fathi came off Dario Khan for an own goal. In the 81st minute the ball fell to substitute Geddo who took one touch before screwing a volley into the top corner from just inside the box. (Egypt 2 Mozambique 0)
