Yakubu was through on goal in the 16th minute but rolled the ball wide of the Benin post. Sessegnon rattled the Nigeria bar with a thunderous shot in the 39th minute, but 2 minutes later Shittu's header from a free-kick was brilliantly knocked away by Chitou and when the ball was crossed back into the danger area a header resulted in Boco handling the ball which Yakubu coolly rolled home with Chitou going the wrong way. Benin had a good chance in the 55th minute with Kobena hitting the crossbar, but the Nigeria penalty in the first half was enough to decide the outcome of the match. (Nigeria 1 Benin 0)

Saturday January 16th Pharaohs safe Egypt picked up another 3 points to secure their passage into the next round of the competition with a 2-0 win over Mozambique. The Mozambicans matched the African champions for most of the first half, but had to rely on their keeper to dive to his right and beat away a low shot from Motaeb in first-half stoppage time. Two minutes into the 2nd half Mozambique fell behind when a low cross from Ahmed Fathi came off Dario Khan for an own goal. In the 81st minute the ball fell to substitute Geddo who took one touch before screwing a volley into the top corner from just inside the box. (Egypt 2 Mozambique 0)
