Malawi shock Desert Foxes

Group minnows Malawi celebrated their first ever win in the African Cup of Nations with a convincing victory over World Cup team Algeria in the 2nd day of the competition. Algerian keepers Chaouchi's attempted clearance in the 17th minute hit Kanyenda and fell to Russel Mwafulirwa who gave Malawi a shock lead. A through ball from Ziani presented Saifi with a chance in the 24th minute but his lob over the keeper cleared the bar, and Kafoteka doubled the lead for Malawi with a powerful header in 35th minute. Three minutes into the 2nd half Chaouchi could only palm a cross to Russel who struck the post and Banda squeezed in the rebound. Ziaya missed a free header for Algeria in the 66th minute as did Msowoya for Malawi 6 minutes later. (Malawi 3 Algeria 0)

Burkina Faso hold Elephants

Pre-tournament favourites Ivory Coast were held to a goalless draw by a well organised Burkina Faso. The dominant Ivorians, who had a penalty appeal turned down, came closest when Kone side-footed inches wide in the 68th minute shortly after Dagano had tested Boubacar Barry with a 35-yard free-kick at the other end. With the withdrawal of Togo, Ghana are the only other team in this group. (Ivory Coast 0 Burkina Faso 0)
