African kings punish Lions

Egypt, the reigning champions of Africa took a step closer to another final as they knocked Cameroon out of the competition. The indomitable Lions of Cameroon took the lead in the 26th minute when a corner kick from Emana went straight in touching the head of Ahmed Hassan on its way in at the near post, but 11 minutes later Hassan who was playing his 170th match for Egypt took a long range shot which bounced past Kameni and into the back of the net. With no more goals in normal time the match went into extra time and within 5 minutes Egypt had gained a 2 goal advantage. Gedo ghosted in to poke a sloppy back pass past Kameni in the 93rd minute, and 2 minutes later a free kick from Hassan was pushed onto the bar and came of the goal-line but a goal was awarded. Chedjou received a straight red 8 minutes from time when he let the ball bounce behind him and pulled down Gedo. Egypt will meet Algeria in the semi final. (Egypt 3 Cameroon 1 aet)

Penalty heartbreak for Zambia

Ten-man Nigeria reached the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals after beating Zambia 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out. Mweene reacted quickly to get down in the 30th minute and keep out a powerful shot from Mikel which was the only real threat on goal in the first half. Zambia were more promising in the 2nd half but neither team could break the deadlock and when Apam was shown red for a second bookable offence a minute into the second period of extra time, Nigeria seemed happy to have the match decided by a penalty shoot-out. Both teams showed composure from the spot and scored their first 3 kicks emphatically but with Enyeama having saved from Nyirenda the Nigerian keeper stepped for the 5 kick and sent his opposite number the wrong way and out of the competition. Nigeria will meet Ghana in the semi final. (Nigeria 0 Zambia 0 pen 5-4)
