Ghana end host's hopesA goal in the first half took Ghana to the semi-finals at the expense of hosts Angola. Gyan got on the end of a long pass and rolled the ball accurately past Carlos in the Angola goal after only 16 minutes. Angola had several chances to draw level, but a free header from Manucho was saved by Kingson on the half-hour mark and the same player headed over the bar unchallenged a minute before the break and then again in the 73rd minute of the match. Algeria send Elephants homePre-tournament favourites Ivory Coast were knocked out by Algeria in extra time. After only 4 minutes the ball broke to Kalou in the box and the Ivorian duly obliged, but Algeria fought back and were level 5 minutes before the break when Matmour picked the ball up on the 18 yard line and fired it in off the left post. Matmour took advantage of some slack defending to break free in the 68th minute but Barry made a brilliant save to deny Algeria the lead, and with 5 minutes remaining Gervinho was through at the other end but lifted the ball over the bar. With only a minute left, substitute Keita unleashed a screamer into the top left corner worthy of winning any match, but 2 minutes into stoppage time Bougherra's header bounced past the despairing dive of Barry and in off the post to take the match to extra time. Algeria took the lead 3 minutes into the first period of extra time when a long cross found Bouazza who headed the ball down and into the net at the far post. A powerful shot by Drogba was parried away superbly by Chauchi in the 98th minute, but Algeria had several chances to put the match beyond Ivory Coast with Ghezzal missing a sitter in front of goal and heading over the bar minutes later. Kolo Toure had a goal disallowed for offside at the end of the match and the favourites are out while Algeria celebrate a well earned victory (Algeria 3 Ivory Coast 2 aet) |
