Monday January 18th Stale mates through A goalless draw between Algeria and hosts Angola saw both teams through to the next round. Monday January 18th Mali winners head home Mali fell foul of the head-to-head rule and were eliminated despite winning their last match. A backpass to Sanudi resulted in him clearing the ball only as far as Kanoute who punished the Malawian keeper on the volley after only 36 seconds. A scorching free kick from Seydou Keita 2 minutes later arrowed into the top corner and will 3 minutes of the half remaining Bagayoko was free on goal but headed wide. Malawi pulled a goal back in the 58th minute after a scramble in the box the ball fell to Russell who swept it home, but in the 71st minute Russell missed a glorious chance, heading the ball down and over the empty goal from just 2 yards out. Five minutes from time Bagayoko knocked the ball down to Modibo who returned it for an easy header to seal a 3-1 win for Mali (Mali 3 Malawi 1)
