Stale mates through

A goalless draw between Algeria and hosts Angola saw both teams through to the next round. An Algerian free-kick floated into the box in the 22nd minute fell to Bougherra in front of goal but Angolan keeper Carlos bravely blocked his effort. Three minutes into the 2nd half Bouazza got to the by line and drilled the ball across the face of goal but Matmour failed to connect. As it became apparent that a stalemate would suit both sides the referee's final whistle seemed to be the most eagerly awaited event of the match. (Angola 0 Algeria 0)
