Senegal and Tunisia shared 4 goals in the opening match of group D. Jemaa Issam played a one-two with Wissem Bekri before firing the ball across the goal and into the far corner of the Senegal net after only 9 minutes. Senegal's only contribution had been an effort from Niang which tricled past the post in the 23rd minute, until a slip-up by the otherwise reliable Jaidi allowed Moustapha Sall to score with the last kick of the half. Early in the 2nd half Kamara slipped the ball past the keeper and wide of the Tunisian post and Niang side-footed the ball wide from in front of goal on the hour-mark, but 6 minutes later a Tunisian failed clearance fell to Diomansy Kamara stabbed the ball home from 6 yards. Mejdi Traoui stunned the Senegalese keeper with a bolt out of the blue in the 83rd minute to give Tunisia a share of the points. (Tunisia 2 Senegal 2)

Having failed to get on the score-sheet in this tournament 2 years ago, South Africa finally broke their duck with a late goal to earn a point against Angola. South Africa's Teko Modise brought a good save out of Lama with a 30 yard shot in the 5th minute, and the Boys looked sharp until Manchester United new recruit scored for Angola with a flying header in the 29th minute. The 2nd half didn't come to life until late on when South African threw caution to the wind which created chances for both sides. Lama had to be at full stretch to push away Thembinkosi Fanteni's low shot in the 80th minute and moments later the ball was cleared off Angola's goal line when Aaron Mokoena flicked the ball past Lama and onto the post, but the referee had blown for an infringement. With only 3 minutes remaining Elrio van Heerden let fly from 25 yards into the top right corner to bring the match level. Both teams went close with strikes from distance in the dying minutes, but to no avail. (Angola 1 South Africa 1)
