Egypt stroll to victory
The hosts Egypt kicked off the 25th African Cup of Nations with a 3-0 win over Libya. Mido headed the Egyptians into the lead in the 17th minute and 5 minutes later Abo Treka doubled their lead from a free-kick. The Libyan goalkeeper Agustini who had already been booked in the first half, was sent off in the 74th minute for pulling down an opponent in the box. Ghazalla saved Mido's penalty kick with his first touch but Ahmed Hassan made no mistake from the rebound.

Drogba is spot on
A well taken penalty by Drogba in the 38th minute gave Ivory Coast the edge over the 2004 finalists Morocco who will suffer an early exit if they fail to upset the hosts in their next group match. (Ivory Coast 1 Morocco 0)

Eto'o makes the difference
Cameroon faced Angola in their first competitive match since failing to qualify for the World Cup. Samuel Eto'o opened the scoring after 19 minutes with an inch-perfect free-kick, but Flavio Amado equalized for Angola on the half hour mark when he sent Soleimano the wrong way from the penalty spot. Eto'o got on the end of a cross to restore Cameroon's lead with a header in the 39th minute, and completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute with a powerful low shot from outside the area. DR Congo punish Togo
After both teams had missed several chances, Mabi scored for DR Congo by beating the goalkeeper with a deft finish on the stroke of half time. Lua Lua slotted home a second in the 63rd minute to condemn Togo to a 2-0 defeat.

Sunday January 22nd

Zambia run out of steam
Zambia got off to a perfect start against the reigning champions when a defensive error allowed Chamanga to go passed the Tunisian keeper and give his team a shock lead. Dos Santos equalized with a header in the 36th minute, and a lunging header by Bouazizi gave Tunisia the lead 7 minutes after the break. Dos Santos got behind the Zambian defence twice to beat the keeper in the 83rd minute and then with almost the last kick of the game to claim his hat-trick and give Tunisia a flattering 4-1 victory. (Tunisia 4 Zambia 1)

Sunday January 22nd

The Boys go down to Guinea
Two late goals sent a new-look South Africa to an embarrassing defeat against Guinea. Sambe Bangoura stole in to break the deadlock with a brave header in the 78th minute, and with only 2 minutes remaining a cross was headed down for Ousmane Bangoura to stroke the ball home and put the result beyond doubt. (Guinea 2 South Africa 0)

Monday January 23rd

Nigeria enjoy late strike
After an uneventful first 30 minutes, the match gradually increased in tempo with both teams creating chances in the second half. Taiwo took advantage of a lapse of concentration in the Ghanaian wall to score indirectly from a free-kick with only 5 minutes of the match left. (Nigeria 1 Ghana 0)

Monday January 23rd

Senegal find it easy
Senegal missed several chances and had a goal disallowed before Henri Camara was put through and rounded the keeper for the opener in the 59th minute. Benjani missed a sitter for Zimbabwe in the 70th minute, and 10 minutes later substitute Issa Ba side-footed the ball into the Zimbabwean goal with his first touch. (Senegal 2 Zimbabwe 0)
